Delhi HC Reserves Order on CLAT UG-2025 Pleas
Background of the Case
- CLAT UG-2025 was conducted on December 1, 2024.
- The results were published on December 7, 2024, by the Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLUs).
- Multiple CLAT aspirants filed petitions in various High Courts alleging errors in the question paper and answer key, claiming that these had adversely affected their scores and ranks.
Supreme Court’s Intervention
- On February 6, 2025, the Supreme Court stepped in to streamline the process and transferred all related petitions to the Delhi High Court.
- The SC stated this was to ensure “consistent adjudication”, preventing conflicting judgments from different High Courts across India.
- This transfer came upon transfer petitions filed by the Consortium of NLUs, aiming for consolidated resolution.
Delhi High Court’s Hearings and Developments
- The Delhi High Court (Division Bench) comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela took up the matter.
- On April 9, 2025, the Court reserved its order on the batch of petitions related to CLAT UG-2025 questionnaire errors.
- Arguments were presented from both sides:
- Petitioners’ lawyers, representing aggrieved candidates.
- Consortium of NLUs’ legal team, defending the original key.
Separate Proceedings for CLAT PG-2025
- The Bench stated that CLAT PG-2025 petitions would be heard separately.
- The date for PG hearing was fixed as April 21, 2025.
- This highlights the Court’s view on the urgency of UG-related petitions due to their impact on undergraduate admissions.
Earlier Delhi High Court Intervention (December 2024)
- On December 20, 2024, a Single Judge Bench of the Delhi High Court gave a landmark judgment on a CLAT UG aspirant’s plea.
- The judge:
- Identified errors in two questions of the CLAT 2025 paper.
- Directed the Consortium to revise the CLAT 2025 result accordingly.
- Declared the identified errors as “demonstrably clear”, and held that ignoring such mistakes would lead to “injustice”.
- However, the Single Judge rejected the aspirant’s plea concerning two additional questions.
Appeals and Review Petitions
- Both parties filed appeals:
- The CLAT aspirant challenged the rejection of his plea regarding the other two questions.
- The Consortium challenged the Single Judge’s decision to revise the result.
- On December 24, 2024, the Division Bench of the Delhi High Court refused to stay the Single Judge’s verdict.
- It found no prima facie error with the ruling and permitted the Consortium to declare the revised results as per the order.
Broader Student Reaction and Legal Strategy
- Several students and petitioners pushed for their cases to be heard in Delhi High Court, due to its favourable precedent in recognizing and addressing exam errors.
- Many felt this would improve their admission chances if the errors were acknowledged and rectified officially.
Court’s Observations on Candidate Anxiety
- The Court acknowledged the “suspense and anxiety” being faced by CLAT aspirants.
- It emphasized the need to conclude the hearing quickly, especially for UG admissions, to avoid uncertainty in the academic calendar.
Conclusion for CLAT Aspirants (2026)
- This case reflects the importance of legal remedies in entrance exam disputes.
- Aspirants must understand:
- The role of courts in protecting candidate rights.
- The legal process behind revising answer keys and merit lists.
- The powers of the Supreme Court to transfer petitions for consistent rulings.
- Such developments are crucial not only for awareness but also as potential legal reasoning or current affairs questions in the CLAT 2026 exam.
